From 1 April 2026, the minimum employer and employee KiwiSaver contribution rates will increase to 3.5% (from 3%).

The rates will rise automatically for both employee and employer contributions, with effect for all pay days from 1 April.

You can temporarily reduce your employee contribution rate to 3% for a minimum period of 3 months by applying to IRD, however, any reduction will only be valid for a maximum period of 12 months, after which you need to apply for another temporary rate reduction if you want it to continue. There is no limit on the number of rate reductions you can undertake, and you will be able to revoke your rate reduction at any time.

If you’re aged 16 or 17, and are contributing to KiwiSaver from your wages, you’ll qualify for employer contributions from 1 April 2026, as long as you meet other eligibility criteria.
